How to Get the Most Out of Your Shark Ray Alley Experience in Belize
Hello, fellow adventurers! Welcome to my guide on making the most of your Shark Ray Alley experience in breathtaking Belize. Get ready for an exhilarating journey as we delve into everything you need to know about swimming with the sharks and rays in this tropical paradise.
I traveled to Belize as part of a Regal Princess Western Caribbean cruise program. This encounter with the shark and rays at Ray Alley was one of the excursions that Princess offered. Before I left, I didn't know what to anticipate going on this adventure. I had only reserved this particular experience because I wanted to visit Caye Caulkner, and this was the only way to go there. To be honest, the experience blew me away.
If you are staying on the landside in Belize, plenty of suppliers are available at the port to book a trip with.
Where are Shark Ray Alley and Caye Caulker?
Caye Caulker, located a few miles off the coast of Belize in the Caribbean Sea, is a slice of paradise that captures the essence of laid-back island living. This coral island, part of the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System, boasts a unique charm with its sandy streets, colorful wooden houses, and an unhurried atmosphere that invites visitors to slow down and savor the beauty of the surroundings.
The island, measuring just five miles long and less than one mile wide, is a haven for water enthusiasts and nature lovers. With its azure waters, vibrant coral reefs, and diverse marine life, including Shark Ray Alley, Caye Caulker is a prime destination for snorkeling, diving, and exploring the wonders of the underwater world.
How to Get to Shark Ray Alley, Belize
Embarking on an unforgettable journey to Shark Ray Alley from the Belize Cruise Port is a seamless and exhilarating experience. As your cruise ship anchors offshore, you will first take the tender to the port. This transfer takes about 15-20 minutes depending on the number of ships in port. (Belize has a limited number of tender vessels so this process can be delayed).
Once shoreside you will be directed down the pier to meet your excursion guides and biologists. Here you will sign your waivers and pre-order lunch as this excursion provides time to eat at the Lazy Lizard on Caye Caulkner as part of the trip. Once the waivers are signed, the journey will commence. This was one of the most confusing parts of the trip. As three cruise ships were in port that day, thousands of people milled about the pier area looking for their tours.
As this tour is on a boat, we are advised to use the restroom before boarding the vessel. In this case, they are located inside a store where no doubt is hoped that the tourists will linger and purchase some souvenirs. I recommend against shopping before the excursion as whatever you buy might get wet.
Once onboard, you will experience a scenic boat ride towards Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulkner for the next forty-five minutes. The boat journey allows you to soak in the beauty of the Caribbean Sea and its picturesque islands. You will also have the opportunity to snorkel along the Belize Barrier Reef system.
What is the Belize Barrier Reef System?
The Belize Barrier Reef System, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most remarkable marine ecosystems on the planet unfolds along the eastern coast of Belize in the Caribbean Sea. Stretching over 190 miles, it stands as the second-largest barrier reef globally, renowned for its extraordinary biodiversity and vibrant coral formations. This natural wonder encompasses a network of coral reefs, cayes, and atolls, offering a habitat for an astonishing array of marine life, including tropical fish, rays, sea turtles, and numerous coral species. Shark Ray Alley lies within this ecosystem.
The significance of this reef system goes beyond its beauty; the Belize Barrier Reef plays a crucial role in global marine conservation, showcasing the importance of preserving these delicate ecosystems for generations to come.
What is Snorkeling on the Belize Barrier Reef like?
A snorkeling adventure on the Belize Barrier Reef is an unparalleled experience that combines the awe-inspiring beauty of vibrant coral formations with the thrill of a unique drift snorkel. Unlike traditional snorkeling, this encounter with the underwater wonders of the reef involves navigating through the gentle currents, waves, and winds that characterize this dynamic marine environment.
The drift snorkel on the Belize Barrier Reef adds an element of excitement as you float along the coral formations, allowing you to witness the kaleidoscope of marine life that thrives in these nutrient-rich waters. This creates a one-of-a-kind adventure. I was a bit surprised at how strong the current was on this particular day. We even found a brittle starfish.
However, not far away from the beauty of the undersea world lies the edge of the barrier reef and the boundary between the shallow coastline and the ocean's depths. This edge is identified by pounding waves as the ocean energy is compressed as it meets the shallow reefs. You do NOT want to be anywhere near there! Be aware of where you are and where your guide directs you. If you are not a strong swimmer, you can quickly get into trouble.
As an experienced swimmer and snorkeler, I was sometimes somewhat uncomfortable in this environment. I was quite anxious to return to the boat and head towards Shark Ray Alley, where I had been told the conditions were more favorable.
What to Expect at Shark Ray Alley
The boat ride to Shark Ray Alley usually takes about fifteen to twenty minutes from the snorkeling stop. The two stops may be done in reverse, depending on the weather and sea conditions. Here is what to expect.
Your boat will anchor on a shallow sand bar within the Belize Barrier Reef system. The water depth will be about four to six feet. You will once again don your mask and snorkel and leave the boat. As you plunge into the crystal-clear waters of Shark Ray Alley, prepare yourself for a surreal underwater experience like no other!
As you snorkel through the vibrant coral gardens, you'll be surrounded by nurse sharks and southern stingrays. These majestic creatures are accustomed to human presence, creating a unique opportunity for up-close encounters. Of course, their presence is assisted by the tour guides tossing sardines in the water to encourage their appearance.
Let me tell you, swimming with the sharks was a far greater experience than I could have imagined. I was expecting small sharks, about two to feet in length and rays of one to two feet in diameter. These magnificent marine creatures were MUCH bigger than that! The sharks were four to six feet long and eight to twelve inches in diameter. They were BIG! The rays were two to three feet in diameter with tails of three to four feet.
Normally, I am not too distracted by marine flora and fauna (fish, jellyfish, sea grass, starfish), but when an animal of that size bumps into you, you can't help but let out a small scream! I quickly learned that if I float on the surface and move further away from the boat, the animals are more spread out, making it easier to appreciate them in their natural habitat. In addition to sharks and rays, keep an eye out for other tropical fish species, such as sea turtles and manatees, known to frequent these waters.
If you are planning a trip to Shark Ray Alley other than on a cruise excursion, tours typically leave directly from San Pedro Town on the mainland or Ambergris Caye or Caye Caulkner. Look for reputable tour operators that offer snorkeling packages to Shark Ray Alley. Boat rides are shared; the journey typically takes around 30 minutes from Ambergris Caye. Make sure to check the weather and sea conditions before embarking on your trip.
How To Prepare for Your Trip to Shark Ray Alley Belize
To make the most of your Shark Ray Alley experience, it's crucial to come prepared. Here's a checklist to ensure you're ready for the adventure:
Snorkeling Gear: Most reputable tour operators will have all the necessary equipment onboard: mask, snorkel, fins, and lifejacket. If you wish to bring your own equipment, you are welcome to do so.
Water Shoes: Water shoes are not necessary for snorkeling, but they are handy for swimming with sharks. We sometimes stood on the sea floor containing small shells, sea grass, and broken coral.
Sun Protection: The Belizean sun can be intense, so pack waterproof sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and a rash guard for extra protection.
Underwater Camera: Capture the magic of your adventure with an underwater camera to immortalize those incredible moments.
Swimwear and Towel: Opt for comfortable, secure swimwear that allows easy snorkeling movement. Bring a towel to dry off.
Waterproof Storage Bag: With twenty-five to forty people getting on and off the boat, a substantial amount of water will be splashed onboard the ship. A waterproof bag protects your clothing and other electronics from water damage.
Cash or Credit Card: Many Shark Ray Alley tours will plan on departing mid-morning and incorporate a lunch stop at the Lazy Lizard restaurant in Caye Caulkner. Options to pre-order lunch are done prior to embarking on the adventure. This speeds up the time on the island. Time on the island is usually only about one hour so if you want to explore, eat fast!
