So you have decided to go on vacation in the Caribbean. St. Thomas is widely known for its shopping and especially for jewelry shopping. But did you know that St. Thomas has some of the best views, food and beaches in the Caribbean? When I tell people I went to St. Thomas, they always ask those questions. Here is a guide to some of the best beaches.
Whether it is on a cruise or as a hotel or resort stay, St. Thomas has the powdery white sand and calm turquoise waters that are the epitome of what people want to find for a beach. Planning a trip to the Caribbean would not be complete without a stop to St. Thomas to experience the warm, breathtaking beaches throughout the island.
So where are the best beaches on St Thomas?
Megan’s Bay Beach
Protected from the rest of the Caribbean, Megan’s Bay Beach and has some of the softest sand. The water is calm and unbelievability clear and ideal for swimming and snorkeling. You can see all kinds of fish and turtles without even using s snorkel on some days.
The shoreline surrounding the beach has plenty of shaded areas to protect your from the sun and has wonderful palm trees to make the beauty of the beach even more attractive. The beach has all the conveniences of parking, lifeguards, equipment rental, freshwater showers, restaurants and bars. Be aware that there is an entrance fee but well worth the while for such an amazing beach. The small restaurant/bar sell chicken sandwiches, burgers and salads and is reasonable. Drinks are available if you wish.
Tip: If you arrive on a cruise ship, there are usually several excursions which will include Magen’s Bay Beach on their itinerary. If not on a cruise, just take a taxi to this amazing beach.
Honeymoon Beach
If you are looking for an alternative to Megan’s bay, try Honeymoon beach on Water Island. A short water taxi ride will take you to this secluded location to lounge on the soft sand and experience the calm waters of azure blue. Here you will discover vibrant coral reefs, tropical fish and sea turtles. The beach is lined with palm trees and lush vegetation making an interesting contract to the beautiful blue water.
Beach chairs and umbrellas can be rented right on the beach. If you come by car, be aware that there is a parking fee and pass and the space is limited.
This beach is really a piece of paradise!
Secret Harbour Beach
Sunset Harbour beach is one of the best beaches on the islands. Again the sand is soft, white and powdery and the water is this amazing shade of azure blue. At this beach you can lounge in the sun or partake in snorkeling, kayaking, paddle boarding or scuba. The water is crystal clear and you can see schools of fish, nurse sharks, and sea turtles in the water and crabs and conch shells on the land. The shallow waters make this beach perfect for families with young children.
The Sunset Grill restaurant is onsite and available for snacks and meals. Reservations can be made for the evening sitting or just grab a seat at the bar.
Brewer’s Bay
At the far end of the island, Brewer’s Bay Beach near the airport and is more frequented by the locals. It is a quieter beach. Brewer’s Bay is a no frills beach so there are no chair or umbrella rentals. It is stunning nonetheless! It is quite an expansive beach with powdery sand and beautifully lined with natural shade trees.
Although this beach features great swimming and snorkeling, the best feature of this beach are the sea turtles! They are everywhere!
Sapphire Beach
A little harder to get to but Sapphire Beach stands out to be included as one of the best beaches on St Thomas. It also has the usual white sand beach and beautiful blue water but it is not as popular as Magen’s Bay or Honeymoon Beach. It is a smaller beach so it is better to get their earlier in the day.
There is a small shack set up for watersports rentals which include gear for snorkeling, kayaking, and paddle boarding. This beach does tend to be more windy and as such it is known to be frequented by the local windsurfers. It can also have sea grass wash ashore during the windier times.
So these are just five of the best beaches in St. Thomas. There are other beaches but these are the most popular. Whether you decide to visit them on a cruise excursion or plan on spending a longer time on St. Thomas, be sure to visit at least one of these beaches.
Can imagine the feeling of lying on some of the best beaches in the Caribbean? Bring a picnic with some local food and enjoy the day.
