If you are looking for a unique place to stay in Eastern Ontario that is great for large families or a group of friends, this waterfront cottage ticks all the boxes. The following is a review of this cottage.
When we decided to book a waterfront vacation rental, we had a mission to find a unique family vacation cottage that could accommodate ourselves, our two adult children and their significant others and a dog. We needed a place on a lake or river that was swimmable as well as usable to launch canoes and kayaks. And we wanted to be a short distance from Ottawa. When we found this rental, we knew we hit the jackpot.
Airbnb had this rental listed that ticked all the boxes. Not only was this unique vacation rental property located near Morrisburg where there are plenty of things to do, but it was unique on its own; this cottage had a sod roof.
My first reaction was one of surprise. Who would design a building in Southern Ontario with such a unique roof style and would it be appropriate for a waterfront cottage? After the initial surprise wore off, I started to really think about it. After all, roofs made from sod are not an original idea nor are they new technology.
Having travelled to Norway in the early 1990’s, I recall seeing plenty of farmers houses and small rural buildings built into the hills and they all had a sod roof.
History of the Sod Roof
Throughout Scandinavia, the practice of covering roofs with birch bark and sod traces its roots back to ancient times, offering a testament to the enduring wisdom of traditional building methods. The Viking and Middle Ages marked an era when the majority of homes in the region embraced the charm and functionality of sod roofs. These unique architectural features, also known as turf roofs, embody a quintessentially Scandinavian approach to sustainable construction.
The meticulous craftsmanship involved the layering of sod atop a foundation of several layers of resilient birch bark, all delicately positioned on gently sloping wooden roof boards. This ingenious combination not only provided insulation against the harsh Nordic climate but also seamlessly integrated the dwellings with their natural surroundings. As a living roof, the sod acted as a protective layer, regulating indoor temperatures and harmonizing with the landscape, creating a harmonious coexistence between human habitation and the surrounding environment. The enduring prevalence of sod roofs in Scandinavian history showcases the region's profound connection to its ecological heritage and the resourceful ingenuity of its inhabitants across the ages.
Until the latter half of the 19th century, the sod roof reigned supreme as the predominant roofing choice for rural log houses not only in Norway but also in expansive regions across Scandinavia. This architectural phenomenon persisted through time, and even in contemporary Norway, the landscape is adorned with traditional homes proudly sporting their distinctive green sod roofs. These structures not only serve as architectural relics but also embody a living connection to a bygone era, seamlessly blending heritage with the present.
In Norway today, the continuation of this tradition extends beyond aesthetics, reflecting a unique symbiosis between architecture and agriculture. Remarkably, it is customary to construct homes in a manner that invites nomadic sheep or goats to ascend freely onto the roofs for grazing. The sight of these animals casually navigating the undulating greenery atop the houses is a charming and surreal spectacle, an enchanting fusion of pastoral simplicity and architectural ingenuity.
Encountering such a scene for the first time often elicits spontaneous laughter and prompts a flurry of photography. The juxtaposition of domesticated animals leisurely grazing on rooftops against the backdrop of traditional Norwegian homes creates a whimsical tableau that captures the imagination. This endearing aspect of Norwegian architecture not only serves as a visual delight for visitors but also encapsulates the region's commitment to preserving cultural practices that harmonize with the natural environment. It is a living testament to the adaptability and resourcefulness of Scandinavian communities, where tradition seamlessly meets innovation in a picturesque dance between the past and the present.
Creating this Unique Place to Stay in Ontario
In the creation of this rental cottage, the Scandinavian owners infused their native architectural methods into the very essence of this picturesque waterfront setting, resulting in a property that stands as a testament to their unique vision and cultural heritage. Drawing inspiration from their Scandinavian roots, the owners seamlessly melded traditional building techniques with the demands of the idyllic waterfront environment.
Diverging from the conventional norms often associated with architectural practices in Norway, the owner has embraced a distinctive yet charming ritual. Once every summer, this unconventional custodian ascends to the rooftop with a lawnmower in tow, not to manicure a conventional lawn but to meticulously trim the verdant expanse of the sod roof. This act, both practical and whimsical, showcases the innovative adaptability of the owners, who have harmoniously integrated their cultural practices with the demands of their new surroundings.
In this unique juxtaposition of tradition and innovation, the rental cottage becomes a living canvas where the owners express their affinity for both their Scandinavian roots and the breathtaking waterfront locale. The act of tending to the rooftop vegetation with a lawnmower serves as a playful nod to the traditional pastoral practices of their homeland, adding a touch of humor and authenticity to the overall ambiance.
Thus, the rental cottage becomes more than just a structure; it is a living embodiment of the owners' cultural identity and a testament to their commitment to preserving and celebrating the unique nuances of their Scandinavian heritage. This blend of tradition and adaptation not only creates a distinctive aesthetic but also fosters a sense of connection between the property and its surroundings, offering a truly immersive experience for those fortunate enough to visit and appreciate the charm of this waterfront haven.
One of the concerns I had initially was in regard to insects or small animals that may have made their home within this natural roof top. I was pleasantly surprised that even as we sat on the deck in the evenings there were no more insects and mosquitoes present than I would normally expect at this time of the year.
