Enjoyed the pictures and learning about St Thomas, an island I've never heard of before so had to look it up on the map to understand where it's exactly located. So is it part of the US? It does not show it's an independent nation... Gorgeous place nevertheless.

St. Thomas is part of the US Virgin Islands. Although they have their own government, they elect a delegate to the US Congress. Its citizens carry US passports but they cannot vote for a US President. It falls under similar arrangements as Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, and the Northern Mariana Islands. Americans love traveling there since it has the same currency and offers a vacation alternative to cold winters.

A tricky political concept to get my head around. So not as much democracy for them if they can’t get to elect for a president. It’s a place that cannot evolve and develop as they’d like if they are under that kind of control from the US. I knew about Puerto Rico but had never realised these other islands shared same status. Thank you for this, learnt a lot with your piece.
