How Do I Know It's Time to Retire?
Key emotional signs to consider before you burnout or become unproductive
Retirement is a profound life transition that involves not only financial considerations but also a deep understanding of one's emotional readiness. Knowing when it's time to retire goes beyond age or financial milestones; it's about recognizing the emotional cues that signal a readiness for a new chapter.
In this post, I'll explore various emotional signs that may indicate you are ready to retire, encompassing a range of personal, professional, and familial considerations.
For me, I recognized many of these signs coming out of the pandemic. My job description and duties changed and my desire to do them plummeted. Over the past year, I have been strategically planning my transition to retirement and training my replacements.
I think you will find that many of these signs will resonate with anyone who is approaching retirement age and has not yet pulled the plug.
Is it Time to Embrace Retirement?
Here are 10 signals you're ready to retire that, if ignored, might lead to burnout or other mental health difficulties.
You Can't Wait to Retire:
The most straightforward emotional sign that retirement is on the horizon is an overwhelming sense of anticipation, akin to the feeling of a child eagerly awaiting the arrival of their favorite holiday. This anticipation is not merely a fleeting emotion but a powerful force that permeates your daily thoughts and permeates through every aspect of your being.
The prospect of waking up without the constraints of a work schedule becomes a beacon of joy and excitement, casting a warm glow over your mornings. It's as if the shackles of routine are being lifted, ushering in a new era of personal autonomy and choice. It's a whisper from the soul, urging you to step away from the familiar and embrace a life where each day holds the promise of pursuing personal interests and passions with an unbridled enthusiasm.
The allure of retirement lies not only in the escape from the structured demands of a career but in the prospect of rediscovering the boundless possibilities that life has to offer.
You Don't Enjoy Work Anymore:
Work, which was once a source of profound satisfaction and fulfillment, may gradually lose its luster as retirement draws near. The tasks that were once the cornerstone of your professional contentment might now seem to have lost their sheen, transforming from sources of inspiration to mundane, perhaps even burdensome, obligations.
This subtle shift in perception serves as a poignant sign that you are emotionally ready to embark on a new chapter of life. The diminishing joy that once accompanied your professional endeavors acts as a catalyst prompting introspection and a reevaluation of your priorities. It becomes apparent that the time has come for a change not just from external success but for internal fulfillment as well. We start to recognize a wealth of untapped potential waiting to be explored beyond the confines of a traditional workplace.
You Feel Like Work is "In the Way":
With retirement at the doorstep, a noticeable shift in perspective often occurs, wherein some individuals begin to perceive their work not as a source of purpose and fulfillment but as an inadvertent obstacle hindering their ability to relish life to the fullest. The notion that your job might stand in the way between the present reality and the desired lifestyle.
This realization, that the very responsibilities that once defined professional success are now casting shadows on personal aspirations, serves as a pivotal emotional sign that retirement is steadily climbing the ladder of priorities.
It's an acknowledgment that there is a world waiting beyond the confines of office walls—a world where time is not dictated by deadlines, and the pursuit of personal passions takes precedence over meeting professional quotas.
You Feel "Left Behind":
In our swiftly evolving world, marked by rapid technological advancements and ever-changing industry trends, individuals may feel left behind in the workplace due to technological advancements and changing industry trends.
The struggle to keep pace with progress creates a dissonance with the demands of the modern workplace. Retirement emerges as a liberating oasis, and it provides an opportunity that fosters personal growth, self-discovery and a deeper understanding of what brings genuine fulfillment.
Retirement thus becomes a gateway to a realm where the pursuit of knowledge is not coerced by external pressures but is driven by a genuine and intrinsic curiosity.
You and Your Partner Are on the Same Page:
For many people, retirement is not a solo adventure, but a joint one with their life partner. The choice to retire becomes more meaningful when both partners have a common vision for this important stage of life. This common vision acts as a strong emotional indicator of readiness for the transition to retirement.
The alignment of goals and aspirations between partners acts as a powerful force, creating a foundation for shared dreams. The depth of these discussions signifies unity and paves the way for a retirement that is personally fulfilling and enriching for the relationship.
Collaborative planning covers not only financial aspects but also emotional and experiential ones of retirement. It reflects a commitment to creating a future full of shared joys, experiences, and the pursuit of individual and collective passions.
Achieving a Milestone: Age / Savings / Years of Service:
Achieving emotional readiness for retirement is often marked by tangible milestones that can act as guiding beacons. These milestones, beyond mere numerical markers, serve as powerful indicators aligning feasibility and emotional preparedness. Whether reaching a specific age, accumulating a substantial nest egg, or completing a noteworthy number of dedicated service years, each plays a pivotal role in signaling the opportune time for retirement.
Reaching a certain age is more than a chronological benchmark; it symbolizes a life stage where experiences converge, wisdom accumulates, and the allure of a slower, deliberate pace gains significance.
Accumulating financial stability represents a tangible reality that transforms and supports personal passions, travel, and leisure. The culmination of savings is not just a numeric achievement but an emotional victory, providing the freedom to embrace retirement with a sense of financial security.
The accumulation of service years enables the shift from the workplace to a landscape in which personal interests and lifelong goals take centre stage.
Each milestone, whether chronological, financial, or professional, serves as a compass leading towards the realization of a lifelong dream: to welcome the next chapter with open arms and a heart full of expectation.
Declining Health:
In the face of declining health, retirement becomes not just an option but a vital decision for safeguarding well-being and prioritizing the quality of life. When health issues impede effective work performance or the enjoyment of personal moments, they become a crucial compass in deciding when to retire. Retirement in these circumstances becomes a sanctuary, providing the time and space to nurture health, explore therapeutic activities, and engage in pursuits contributing to overall well-being.
Ultimately, retirement becomes paramount to a better quality of life and richness of life's journey.
Taking Care of a Family Member:
Navigating family responsibilities deeply influences emotional readiness for retirement, transcending personal and career considerations. The obligations tied to family bonds, particularly caring for aging parents or supporting a family member facing health challenges, become compelling catalysts for redirecting the focus towards familial needs.
Caring for aging parents or supporting a family member with health issues, while rewarding, can be time-intensive and emotionally demanding. Retirement offers individuals the avenue to dedicate the necessary time for comprehensive support and to navigate healthcare complexities without career constraints.
Emotional readiness for retirement intertwines with duty, love, and dedication to ensuring the welfare of loved ones. It signifies a shift in priorities, where family becomes the focal point, and the retiree becomes a pillar of support to the familial unit.
New Opportunities Beckon:
The attraction of new opportunities, extending beyond the current job, becomes a compelling emotional sign that retirement is imminent. Stepping into a realm of uncharted paths and possibilities brings excitement and anticipation. Whether it's delving into long-held passions, launching a business venture, or contributing to the community through volunteer work, these fresh avenues beckon retirement, offering a tapestry of possibilities.
In essence, the allure of fresh opportunities makes retirement an emotionally fulfilling choice, symbolizing a shift from the routine of a structured career to a landscape of endless possibilities. The prospect of these opportunities serves as a powerful indicator of emotional readiness and a testament to untapped potential waiting to be discovered in the vibrant tapestry of post-career life.
You just Feel Tired
As

Negative self talk about abilities, failures
Holding onto past mistakes
Living a life that doesn’t serve your purpose
Spending too much time with negative or critical people1
How many of these can you recognize in your own lives?
As we tick ever closer to retirement, sometimes a lifetime of these small, seemingly insignificant tasks can suddenly seem to overpower us. We tend to overthink our future as it ticks ever closer to the end. When our soul is tired, we can start to feel like it will never end. This is the point where it can become dangerous to our mental heath.
Although these feelings of exhaustion can occur at any age, those closer to retirement seem to have more time to re-evaluate these signs and search for better solutions.
Conclusion:
Recognizing the emotional signs that indicate you are ready to retire is a personal and introspective process. Whether fueled by eagerness, a desire for personal fulfillment, or the need to address health and family concerns, these emotional cues provide valuable insights into this significant life transition.
Retirement is not just an end but a beginning, offering the chance to shape a future filled with purpose, joy, and the freedom to explore new horizons.

Are You Ready to Retire?
Sarah Raad
Thank you for including me in this piece! Very informative
I retired in December of 2022, over two years earlier than I planned. You are 100% right - all 10 of these applied to me!! They also started during the pandemic for me, but it took 10 months of serious contemplation, financial figuring, and allowing myself to believe it could be possible before I finally retired. It consumed me for those 10 months, but now I wonder how it could ever have been such a hard decision when all the signs pointed to it being the right decision. Thanks!
