Over the years I've traveled to Australia 35 times. I love Port Douglas - the beach is fantastic. This is also where I got certified to dive, and have fond memories of the live-aboard I was on (since retired). I think one of the best experiences though was spending a day with Hazel Douglas, who owned Native Guide Safari Tours - no longer operating. Hazel was fantastic and her tours took on a different perspective. I believe she was from the Kuku Yalanji tribe in Daintree.
Yes, Port Douglas is magical. It is definitely on my list to return next year. The beach vibe is fantastic. It reminded of of Airlie Beach back in the '80's.

You lived in Australia, right?
Yes, I was based in Brisbane for a year and travelled through the eastern half of the country. Around the coast and up the middle.
I will return next year to see the west.
